We for You | Daily Reflection | *by Maryam* ❤️

Assalamu Alaikum dear Brothers and Sisters, I hope you are all doing well today.

A warm welcome to our new members who recently joined.🌿

In the original Marshmallow Experiment at Stanford, children were given one marshmallow and told they could either eat it immediately or wait to receive two later.
Years later, researchers concluded that the children who waited longer often became more successful in life, and for decades the message became:

self-control is the key to success.

But when the experiment was repeated years later with children from different social and economic backgrounds, the results revealed something much deeper.

*Children from emotionally stable and secure homes were far more likely to wait.*❣️
Children raised around stress, instability, or inconsistency were more likely to eat the marshmallow immediately.

And psychologically, this makes complete sense.
A child who grows up in a trustworthy environment learns:

“If I wait, good things will come.”

But a child who grows up around unpredictability learns:

“If I don’t take what I have now, it may disappear later.”

So the experiment was not only measuring patience.
It was also measuring trust, emotional safety, and the child’s experience of the world.

This reflects such an important reality in parenting, marriage, and even our relationship with Allah SWT .

*People flourish where they feel safe.*❣️

To flourish means to grow, thrive, become emotionally healthy, confident, loving, and secure.

Human beings naturally become their best selves when they feel:

❤️accepted rather than constantly judged,
❤️secure rather than afraid,
❤️loved rather than rejected,
❤️understood rather than shamed.

And *safety does not mean the absence of rules or accountability.*❣️

It means the presence of trust, mercy, consistency, and compassion.

☀️ Children learn and develop best when they feel emotionally safe with their parents or caregivers.

A child who feels safe:

✅asks questions freely,
✅admits mistakes honestly,
✅develops confidence,
✅learns empathy and resilience.

But a child raised mainly through fear, humiliation, or unpredictability may obey outwardly while inwardly becoming anxious, withdrawn, or resentful.

💍*In marriage*, emotional safety allows intimacy and trust to deepen.

A safe spouse is someone with whom you can:

✅be vulnerable without being mocked,
✅disagree without fear of cruelty,
✅make mistakes without constant punishment,
✅express emotions honestly.

When spouses feel emotionally safe, love becomes stronger because neither person is living in constant defensiveness.

🌿*Perhaps the deepest part of this reflection is our relationship with Allah SWT .*

People spiritually flourish when they understand Allah through His mercy, compassion, forgiveness, nearness, and love.

Allah is not only Al-Hakam (The Judge). He is also Ar-Rahman (The Most Merciful), Ar-Raheem (The Especially Merciful), and Al-Wadud (The Most Loving).

A believer who feels spiritually connected to Allah’s mercy is more likely to:

🌿return after mistakes instead of despairing,
🤲🏻make sincere dua,
❤️worship with love and hope,
🌿grow spiritually with sincerity.

This does not mean becoming careless about sin. Islam beautifully balances hope and fear, mercy and accountability.

The Prophet Muhammad pbuh reflected this balance beautifully. He said:

“Make things easy and do not make them difficult. Give glad tidings and do not drive people away.”
—Sahih al-Bukhari & Sahih Muslim

People felt seen, understood, forgiven, and safe enough to change around him.

And perhaps this is one of the greatest reminders for us as parents and spouses:
sometimes the greatest gift we can give our children and families is not perfection -
but an environment of mercy, trust, emotional safety, and sakinah where hearts can truly grow. 🤍

May Allah SWT help us create homes and hearts filled with safety, mercy, and love that no one feels pressured to ‘eat the marshmallow’ out of fear or uncertainty. 🤲🏻
