We for You | Daily Reflection | *by Maryam* ❤️
“How can we live together if our desire patterns don’t match?”
“How do we stay connected when one starts mentally or emotionally, and the other starts physically?”
These are two of the most common questions couples quietly carry inside their hearts,
questions that already contain part of the answer themselves.
But before we explore them, let me share something personal…
In the picture above is a fox who came into our garden. I fed her and cared for her when she was injured recently. Slowly, she began to trust me. And once she trusted, she became close to me and I became responsible for her.
Many of you know the famous line from The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry:
👉 “You become responsible, forever, for what you have tamed.”
You may wonder:
“What does this have to do with desire in marriage?”
Actually - everything.
Islamically:
When someone gives you access to their heart, emotions, and vulnerability, that trust becomes an amanah between you and Allah SWT.
Psychologically:
Trust forms emotional attachment. When trust is broken, the nervous system naturally shifts into protection mode, shutting down both emotional and physical intimacy.
And importantly:
👉 *Marriage is not only physical - it is spiritual and an exchange of emotional energy.*‼️
• Your emotional state affects your spouse immediately.
• Your spouse’s emotional state affects you.
Two hearts living in marriage constantly influence each other -even without words.
*That is why emotional safety must come BEFORE physical intimacy, not after.*‼️
Marriage functions on three interconnected layers:
1️⃣ Spiritual connection -Allah SWT places love, mercy, and tranquility between spouses.
2️⃣ *Emotional energy*-how you speak, behave, support, and respond to one another.
3️⃣ Physical connection -which becomes healthy only when the first two layers are secure.
➡️ *When the spiritual and emotional layers weaken, the physical layer weakens automatically.*‼️
This is why desire cannot grow without safety, trust, and emotional stability.
Just like the fox needed security before coming close, spouses need safety before intimacy.
So yes - the fox and desire are deeply connected.
When the environment is safe, trust grows. When trust grows, the heart opens. And when the heart opens, desire follows.
Only then can we truly answer:
“How do we live together with different desire patterns?”
“How do we stay connected when we start from different emotional places?”
⭐ While many couples focus on fixing the desire itself, they are often looking in the wrong place.
Desire is almost never the real problem.‼️
Real problems between spouses are in:
🌱 Safety
🌱 Trust
🌱 Emotional connection
🌱 Predictability
🌱 Gentleness
🌱 Appreciation
🌱 Respectful communication
Desire grows from these conditions -it cannot replace them.
Most couples begin by trying to “fix intimacy,” but the correct path is to *fix the environment where intimacy grows.*❗️
Because intimacy is like a plant:
🌿 It cannot grow in hard soil.
🌿 It cannot bloom during storms.
🌿 It cannot survive without sunlight, warmth, and nourishment.
You must first prepare the soil -
the spiritual environment, the emotional climate, the safety of the home.
Then intimacy becomes a natural outcome -not a forced obligation.
Before asking:
❓ “How do we increase desire?”
Ask instead:
💛 “Is our environment safe enough for desire to grow?”
💛 “Does my spouse feel emotionally understood?”
*If the answer is no from one of the spouse, the first step is rebuilding safety, trust, and emotional energy.*❗️
Because:
⭐ A safe heart opens.
⭐ A peaceful home softens.
⭐ A trusted spouse becomes desirable.
And only then does the marriage begin to heal -not through pressure or demand,
but through connection, mercy, and understanding.
Question to you all. Ask yourself:
👉 Am I truly willing to accept my spouse as they are in this season of life - and meet in the middle, without trying to win, argue, prove, or force my way?
Especially now, knowing that both spouses are responsible for creating a safe and peaceful home. Knowing that desires change, people change, and that many women’s desire begins with emotional connection while many men’s desire begins with the physical.
If your answer is “yes,” then it must be a true yes -
without “but,” without “if,” and without conditions or past grudges.
A real YES means your heart carries pure intention, and you are ready to take steps willingly.
Example:
Husband says : “I want closeness, but I won’t pressure you.”
Wife says: “I want connection too. I just need safety first.”
This is maturity.
So THE FIRST STEP toward restoring desire and intimacy is building a safe and peaceful environment between both spouses, because the heart cannot open where it does not feel protected.
The next steps, InshaAllah, I will share with you soon.
May Allah SWT guide us all, and grant us wisdom and maturity in every step we take. 🤲🏻❤️
