We for You | Daily Reflection | *by Maryam* ❤️
Salam Alaikum dear brothers and sisters, I hope you all are feeling well this Friday.
✨ I highly recommend reading today’s message together with your spouse and talking about it openly. And for those who are not married, take time to reflect on it personally -because the more you understand yourself now, the healthier your future love and relationships will be.
🌿 Today’s reflection is about EGO.
We all use this word, but very few of us can really explain what it means.
Many men proudly say, “It’s my ego -it’s a man’s thing.”
Many women upset and angry say, “It’s his ego - he’s so egoistic.”
💭 Have you ever thought: are we all really talking about the same thing and understanding it in the same way?
💭 Ego doesn’t have a gender.‼️It’s not a “man’s thing” or a “woman’s thing.”
It lives in every human being -the part of us that wants to be right, respected, and seen.
The word “ego” comes from Latin and simply means “I.”
In psychology, Sigmund Freud explained that our mind has three parts:
1️⃣ *The Id*- the part that wants things right now, driven by desire and impulse.
2️⃣ The Ego -the part that tries to balance what we want with what’s real or possible.
3️⃣ The Superego -the inner moral voice, the one that judges and says, “You should’ve done better.”
So when someone says, “It’s my ego,” they’re really talking about the part of themselves that wants to protect pride and image -*the “I” that wants to be respected, right, and seen.*
The superego is that inner critic that keeps reminding you of what you didn’t do perfectly.
Both are part of the mind, but neither defines who you truly are -they’re not your soul.
🌙 In Islam, this inner struggle is called “nafs” -the self that must be trained and purified.
The Qur’an mentions three stages of the nafs:
🌿 Nafs al-ammārah -the self that commands and follows desires.
🌿 *Nafs al-lawwāmah*- the self that feels guilt and reflects on its mistakes.
🌿 Nafs al-muṭma’innah -the peaceful self, content and connected to Allah SWT .
*Every one of us is on this journey- moving from ego to awareness, from control to surrender, from fear to peace.*‼️
💫 Inside each of us live three voices: the child, the ego, and the higher self.
The child is our emotional self -innocent, sensitive, and just wanting to feel safe and loved. It’s the part our ego tries to protect when we feel hurt.
The ego wants control; it’s afraid of being wrong or looking small.
The superego keeps judging, comparing, and demanding perfection.
And deep under all that noise, there’s the soul- the part of us that already knows peace and truth.
*The ego isn’t bad - it’s just scared.*‼️ It thinks that to be safe, we have to defend, argue, and win.
*That’s why in relationships, the ego often fights to be right, even if it destroys connection and love.*‼️
The superego then adds guilt and shame -the voice of our inner critic that never stops talking.
*But the moment we become aware, we gain freedom.*‼️
When you feel your ego wanting to react, pause. Take a breath. Ask yourself,
“Am I protecting my truth, or just my pride?”
And when your inner critic says, “You’re not enough,” answer gently to yourself:
“I’m learning. I’m growing. I’m human.”
❤️ True power isn’t about killing the ego-it’s about understanding where from you reacting and calming it with love. Pay attention like to a scared child, until it no longer needs to fight to feel safe.
In our homes and communities, the ego often speaks first.
But imagine what happens when humility enters the room-
when no one needs to win or prove anything, and we just try to understand one another.*
Wishing everyone wisdom and peace. ❤️
