Salam Alaikum dear Brothers and Sisters. I hope you all are feeling well today.

One of the most common complaints, especially from newly married sisters is about in-laws.
But let’s be fair, brothers also feel trapped, especially when living in their wife’s family home or under pressure from both sides.

So today about IN- LAWS

The tension doesn’t always come from bad intentions. It’s often rooted in:
• cultural expectations and personal beliefs of in laws
• unspoken assumptions
• past experiences of “how marriage or parenting should be”

Whether your relationship with in-laws is peaceful or painful, this message is for you. Even those with kind, supportive in-laws should reflect so we don’t unknowingly become toxic in-laws ourselves.

Let’s be honest: your bloodline will always feel closer to your heart, that’s natural.
But marriage teaches us to grow beyond that, to open our hearts, respect differences, and build a home with those who weren’t born into our lives.

You are not obligated to obey your in-laws the same way you must obey your parents.
However, Islam does instruct you to treat them with:
• Kindness
• Respect
• Good character

*If their advice aligns with Islam and promotes peace, listen with an open heart.*‼️
But respect does not mean blind obedience.

Islam never asks you to tolerate: emotional harm, injustice, manipulation in any relationship.

Signs of toxic behaviour:
• Constant criticism or guilt-tripping
• Attempts to control your marriage or your parenting style
• Disregard for boundaries or creating division

Toxic in-laws may also:

• Gaslight (deny your reality and experiences)
• Use triangulation (turn family members against one another)
• Manipulate through emotional pressure or guilt

This often leads to:
💔Marital stress
⚡️Emotional burnout
🌧️A breakdown of trust and peace in the home

*Emotional boundaries are essential for a healthy marriage and personal well-being.*‼️

You can be polite without being passive, and kind without becoming a victim.

✅ What You Can Do

1. Set Clear Boundaries
Be respectful but firm.
Example: “We’ll visit on weekends, but we need personal space during the week.”
Islam supports this balance.

2. Communicate as a Couple
*Stay united- this is a KEY.*‼️
Use “we” language: “We feel overwhelmed when there’s pressure.”
A strong marriage is your protection.

3. Use the Sandwich Method
Approach conflict kindly: Compliment → Concern → Compliment
Example: “You’ve always been supportive. We just need more space to grow. We still value your presence.”

4. Limit Exposure
It’s okay to reduce interaction if necessary without cutting ties. Islam allows you to protect your mental and emotional well-being.

5. Seek Mediation
Involve a trusted elder, counselor, or scholar if things escalate.

6. Practice Emotional Detachment
Stay polite, but don’t absorb negativity.

7. Prioritise Mental and Spiritual Health
Make space for dua’, journaling, therapy, or self-care.
A clear mind handles stress better.

8. Protect Your Identity
You are not a failure for not meeting unfair expectations.

*Your worth is defined by your sincerity and taqwa not others’ approval.*‼️

*Support each other. Stay united. Protect your home.*❤️

🏠 Should You Live With In-Laws?

In most cases: *NO*— especially early in marriage.

✅Couples need space to grow
✅Shared homes often lead to tension or misunderstandings
✅Privacy, peace, and emotional bonding are harder to maintain

Islamically, a wife has the right to her own living space, separate from in-laws unless she willingly agrees otherwise.

If the environment is kind and respectful, it may work. But if there’s pressure, guilt, or stress, living apart is usually healthier.

💬 A Message to all In-Laws

Please don’t let your love for your child turn into injustice toward their spouse.
Let them grow together.
Don’t compete for attention.
*Be a source of dua, not drama.*‼️
A supporter, not a supervisor.

There’s enough room in the heart for everyone when love is shared with wisdom.

May Allah SWT fill our homes with peace, our families with understanding, and our hearts with humility.
Ameen.🤲🏻❤️
