We for You | Daily Reflection | *by Maryam* ❤️
Salam Alaikum dear brothers and sisters.
I hope you are all feeling well and at peace. Warm welcome new member to the group. ❤️
Today, let us all together reflect on an important topic: The Prison of the Mind.
In the 1960s, psychologist Martin Seligman conducted an experiment with dogs that became known as Learned Helplessness. The dogs were placed in a situation where they experienced mild electric shocks with no way to escape. After several attempts, they stopped trying and simply endured the pain.
Later, when the setup was changed and escape became easy, just by jumping over a small barrier, the dogs still didn’t move. They had learned in their minds that escape was impossible, even though freedom was right in front of them.
This experiment shows how the mind can create a prison stronger than any physical barrier.
Humans do the same, our past failures, fears, and limiting beliefs convince us we “can’t,” even when Allah SWT has already given us the strength and the path forward.
In my work with people, I often see this same pattern. Many sisters and brothers tell me they feel stuck, not because of their actual situation, but because of their thoughts about it. For example, a wife may say, “My husband and I will never improve our communication; this is just how it is,” or a husband may say, “We can’t rebuild trust after so many arguments.”
But when they take small, consistent steps, listening more, speaking with kindness, practicing patience, they often surprise themselves with how much changes.
The prison was never real- it was only in the mind.
If you notice that your mind is rigid and imprisoning you, remember this: it’s your beliefs and fears creating the walls around you not reality. And with Allah’s SWT help, those walls can be broken.
I know many sisters and brothers recite Qur’an for the sake of reading. But today, I invite you to also become conscious of your mental state, to reflect on the prison of the mind, and to use the Qur’an as a key to unlock those chains.
The Qur’an is not only for recitation I believe , it is a book for contemplation, healing, a guide, and a reminder that brings freedom to the heart.
“Verily, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest.”
(Surah Ar-Ra’d 13:28)
Todays Reflection Questions for Everyone:
• What thoughts most often hold me back?
• Do these beliefs align with what Allah SWT and His Messenger pbuh say about me?
• What helps me release negative thought chains?
Then:
✍️Write down 3 recurring thoughts that weigh you down.
✍️Next to each one, write a Qur’an verse or hadith that contradicts or soothes that thought.
✍️End by writing one dua asking Allah SWT to help you break free from these mental prisons.
I’ll write few common mental prisons and islamic antidotes what you can use as an example:
1. Fear of the Future
Prison Thought: *“What if I fail?*What if things go wrong?”*
*Qur’an Key:*🔑
“…And whoever relies upon Allah - then He is sufficient for him.”
(Surah At-Talaq 65:3)
2. Low Self-Worth
Prison Thought: “I am not good enough.”
*Hadith Key:*🔑
The Prophet pbuh said:
“*Allah does not look at your appearance or wealth, but He looks at your hearts and your deeds.”*
(Sahih Muslim)
3. Overthinking and Anxiety
Prison Thought: “I can’t stop worrying.”
*Qur’an Key:*🔑
“Indeed, Allah is with the patient.”
(Surah Al-Baqarah 2:153)
4. Comparing Yourself to Others
Prison Thought: “Everyone else is doing better than me.”
*Hadith Key:*🔑
The Prophet pbuh said:
“Look at those below you, and do not look at those above you, for this is more likely to prevent you from belittling Allah’s favors upon you.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari & Muslim)
5. Fear of People’s Judgement
Prison Thought: “What will people think of me?”
*Qur’an Key:*🔑
“…And Allah is most deserving that you should fear Him, if you are true believers.”
(Surah At-Tawbah 9:13)
Your mind can be your greatest prison, or your greatest place of freedom. ‼️
When you notice your thoughts trapping you, remind yourself: this is only fear, only belief- not truth. The Qur’an is your key, your healing, and your light. With Allah’s SWT help, you are stronger than the walls you imagine. Break the chains of fear and doubt by turning to Him in dhikr, dua, and trust.
And those who are married discuss todays topic with your spouse.
Wishing everyone freedom of mind.🤲🏻❤️
