We for You | Daily Reflection | by Abu Hamdan

We are a few days into Ramadan now.

The excitement of Day 1 has settled. The body feels the hunger. Sleep is lighter. Energy fluctuates. And yet… temptations don’t disappear.

And that is exactly where fasting begins to reveal its purpose.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

_“O young people, whoever among you can afford it, let him marry. Whoever cannot, let him fast, for it is a shield.”_
(Bukhari & Muslim)

A shield.

Not just from hunger ..but from desire. From impulse. From losing control.

Every time you feel hunger and wait until Maghrib, you are training something inside you. You are teaching yourself that you are not a slave to your urges. That you can feel something strongly… and still choose restraint.

And that is power.

Masculinity in Islam is not aggression.

It is control.

Control of anger.
Control of desire.
Control of the tongue.
Control of reaction.

Many men think being strong means raising their voice, reacting loudly, asserting dominance through anger, banging doors, throwing words like weapons.

But that is not strength.

The Prophet ﷺ corrected that illusion when he said:

*“The strong man is not the one who overcomes others, but the one who controls himself when angry.”*
(Bukhari & Muslim)

Now reflect on something deeper.

The Prophet ﷺ also told us:

*“When Ramadan begins, the gates of Paradise are opened, the gates of Hell are closed, and the devils are chained.”*
(Bukhari & Muslim)

If the devils are chained in this month…

And we still lose our temper.
Still snap at those closest to us.
Still fall into temptation.
Still allow our tongue to harm.

Then what is it?

It is not Shaytan this time.

It is the nafs.
It is the habits we built.
It is the ego we protected.
It is the impulses we never disciplined.

Ramadan becomes a mirror.

It shows you clearly who is really in control of your life.

If anger still controls you, then anger has been stronger than your discipline.
If desire still controls you, then impulse has been stronger than your restraint.
If your tongue still harms, then habit has been shaping you more than faith.

And this is not to shame you.

It is to wake you up.

Because once you stop blaming Shaytan…
you realise the battle was never outside.

It was inside you.

And that realisation can either wound your pride…
or build your character.

A man who conquers his own nafs... his impulses, his ego, his reactions .. is stronger than a man who conquers a room full of people.

Ramadan is not only about staying hungry.

It is about building inner authority.

It is about becoming the kind of man who can feel anger and still remain calm.
Feel desire and still choose discipline.
Feel pressure and still respond with steadiness.

If fasting is truly for Allah…
then let it produce strength that is visible in your character.

May Allah make this Ramadan the month we finally stop fighting outward battles… and start winning the inward one. Ameen
